G.1 Investigation, Analysis, and Persistence
Understanding the Creative Process From Quotations From Creative Individuals
The investigation stage can be long, tough, and lonely. Investigation is even harder if you are not prepared or if you do not have the right problem or an ill-defined problem. The investigation is the heart and soul of scientific work. Investigation involves thinking, work, moving, study of facts and concepts, and thinking. Henry Ford said: "Thinking is the hardest work there is, that's why so few people do it."My favorite quote comes from the songwriter lyricist Dorthy Fields: "Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again. Just a quick review of the word diagram below shows that for these famous people, the investigation stage is tough, hard work. Sara Teasdale said: “Wisdom is not acquired save as the result of investigation.”
As an illustration the type of work one encounters in the Investigation, Analysis, and Persistence phase of the Creative Process, I have collected the following, mostly verbs.

Students and scholars of all kinds and of every age aim, as a rule, only at information, not insight. They make it a point of honour to have information about everything, every stone, plant, battle, or experiment and about all books, collectively and individually. It never occurs to them that information is merely a means to insight, but in itself is of little or no value.
