H.1 Judgment, Balancing, and Objectivity
Understanding the Creative Process From Quotations From Creative Individuals
One of my purposes in forming this compilation focusing on judgment was to dispel the negative notion that judgment is not a part of Science. My hope is that having studied this compilation, you will agree with me that judgment is not only an important characteristic to have as a scientist, but an indispensable characteristic. Jules Henri Poincare said that “Invention consists in avoiding the constructing of useless combinations and in constructing the useful combinations which are in the infinite minority. To invent is to discern, to choose.” Making choices is using judgment.. Albert Einstein said that, “Science can only ascertain what is, but not what should be, and outside of its domain value judgments of all kinds remain necessary.” Focus, planning, and knowing what to work on, all require judgment. Balancing and objectivity require judgment.
One of our most difficult tasks is being truthful to ourselves.
