Negativity seems to be the theme of many of the quotes in my collection. We need some hope that education can be improved. Golda Meir wrote: "A teacher is one who has a program.....arithmetic, reading, writing, and so on....fulfills it conscientiously, and feels that he had done his job. An educator tries to give children something else in addition: Spirit." Albert Einstein wrote: “It is, in fact, nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry; for this delicate little plant, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom. Without this it goes to wrack and ruin without fail.” And so for Golda Meir and Albert Einstein, if we can maintain spirit and freedom for our students, maybe we have a chance. Organized education should enable continued self-education. Education should not place future limits on students. The creative process requires observation, curiosity, problem recognition, tenacity, and belief that they can solve problems that are in their self interest. Robert Maynard Hutchins said: "The objective of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives."

By the time the average person finishes college, he or she will have taken over 2,600 tests, quizzes, and exams. The right answer approach becomes deeply ingrained in our thinking. This may be fine for some mathematical problems where there is in fact only one right answer. The difficulty is that most of life isn’t this way. Life is ambiguous; there are many right answers- all depending on what you’re looking for. But if you think there is only one right answer, then you’ll stop looking as soon as you find one.

Train yourselves. Don't wait to be fed knowledge out of a book. Get out and seek it. Make explorations. Do your own research work. Train your hands and your mind. Become curious. Invent your own problems and solve them. You can see things going on all about you. Inquire into them. Seek out answers to your own questions. There are many phenomena going on in nature the explanation of which cannot be found in books. Find out why these phenomena take place.
